Koppies was laid out as a town in 1910. Formerly Kopjes, meaning 'hills'. The name is derived from that of the farm on which it was laid out: Honingkopjes, which is Dutch for 'honey hills'. (GPS coordinates: 27.2373 S, 27.5675 E).
