Kroonstad was founded in 1855. One suggestion for the origin of its name is that it was taken from Kronstadt near Leningrad. Another suggests that the town was named after a ford called Kroondrift. The ford itself was named Kroondrift because a horse named Kroon broke its leg there. (GPS coordinates: 27.6385 S, 27.2328 E).
