Harrismith is named after Harry Smith (1787-1860), Governor of the Cape. The town was founded in 1849. However, in 1850 it was moved 16km west to its current location on the banks of the Wilge River due to lack of water. The town is a popular refuelling spot for trucks, as well as for vacationers who drive to Durban from Johannesburg every year for the December holidays. (GPS coordinates: 28.2777 S, 29.1417 E).
