Karkloof is a nature reserve that takes its name from the Karkloof River. The name is Afrikaans for 'horse-cart ravine'. The story goes that in 1854, on the road from Howick, a farmer's cart overturned and was wrecked on a steep gorge when his horses bolted. The abandoned cart became a well-known landmark in the area. (GPS coordinates: 29.3064 S, 30.2178 E).
