Colenso was named after Bishop John William Colenso (1814-1883), first Anglican bishop of Natal. Established in 1855, it was the scene of battle during the Second Anglo-Boer War where both sides fought over a strategically located railway bridge. (GPS coordinates: 28.7482 S, 29.831 E).
