Winburg was founded in 1841 on the farm Waaifontein. The name was originally spelt Wenburg and means 'town of winning'. It is thought that the name might refer to a military victory over the Matabele at Mosega on 17 January 1837. (GPS coordinates: 28.5059 S, 27.0134 E).
