Dewetsdorp was founded on the farm Kareefontein in 1876 and at first bore this name. In 1880 the settlement was officially recognised under the name Dewetsdorp, after Field-Cornet Jacobus Ignatius de Wet, father of General C R de Wet, who was heavily involved in the town's establishment. During the Second Anglo-Boer War, Dewetsdorp was the scene of heavy fighting. In 1927 the mayor and two councillors were killed when a Huibrecht Jacob de Leeuw, in an attempt to cover up evidence of his embezzlement of town funds, blew up the town hall. The town hall was rebuilt in 1928 and proclaimed a South African Heritage Site in 1995. (GPS coordinates: 29.5811 S, 26.6716 E).
