Bethulie was established in March 1863 and originally named Heidelberg. In 1872 it was renamed after the nearby mission station to avoid confusion with the two other towns named Heidelberg in the Western Cape and Gauteng. (GPS coordinates: 30.4975 S, 25.9646 E).
