Hartswater became a municipality in April 1960 and takes its name from the Harts River, which flows nearby. The name of the river is a translation of a Khoikhoi name Gaobgariep, which means 'heart river', possibly named after a chief or a tribe. (GPS coordinates: 27.7529 S, 24.8125 E).
