Elliotdale is a town that is situated on the banks of the Xhora River. The town was named after a Sir Henry Elliot, who - from 1891 to 1902 - was Chief Magistrate of the Transkei. The anti-apartheid activist and journalist, Donald James Woods (1933-2001), was born in Elliotdale (eXhora). As an outspoken critic of the apartheid government, he was placed under house arrest in 1976, but escaped to Lesotho with his family in 1977. In 2001 he was awarded the Honour of Commander of the British Empire (CBE), for his contribution to Human Rights. (GPS coordinates: 31.9688 S, 28.6806 E).
