Kareedouw was established in 1905. The name is of Khoekhoen origin and has been said to mean 'karee pass', after karee trees, or 'white gorge'. It was also probable that the name is derived from the name of a Khoekhoen tribe that lived there. (GPS coordinates: 33.965 S, 24.2969 E).
