Alexandria is known for its chicory industry, as well as for pineapple and dairy farming. Originally named Olifantshoek, the name of the town was changed in 1873 to Alexandria, after Alexander Smith, a Scottish minister of the Dutch Reformed Church in Uitenhage. (GPS coordinates: 33.6487 S, 26.407 E).
