Aliwal North is situated on the banks of Orange River. It was named by the Governer of Cape Colony, Sir Harry Smith, to commemorate his victory over the Sikhs at Aliwal in India in 1846. Municipal status for the town was achieved in 1882. (GPS coordinates: 30.6995 S, 26.7308 E).
