Bisho was originally the capital of the bantustan of Ciskei, but was incorporated into South Africa during 1994 when the homelands policy was dissolved. It was the scene of what is now known as the Bisho massacre: on 7 September 1992 the Ciskei Defence Force opened fire on protestors, killing about 30 people. In July 2004 its name was officially changed to Bhisho. The name is taken from the Buffalo River and is Xhosa for 'buffalo'. (GPS coordinates: 32.8457 S, 27.4487 E).
