Vredenburg meaning 'peaceful town' was originally named Twisfontein (quarrel spring), later as Procesfountain (lawsuit fountain) because of the strife over the fresh water spring in the area. It was renamed Vredenburg (town of peace) in 1875 after a church was built near the disputed spring. (GPS coordinates: 32.9126 S, 18.0014 E).
