Upper Tsitsana is named after the Tsitsana River that flows past the settlement. Tsitsana is derived from the Xhosa word Tsitsa that is said to mean 'to ooze' or 'to trickle', referring to the 'secretion' of rain from the slopes, as well as snow falling on the Drakensberg. (GPS coordinates: 30.8325 S, 28.3049 E).
