Fort Beaufort was established in 1837 around a fort of the same name. The fort was named after the Duke of Beaufort, father of Lord Charles Somerset. The War of the Axe (1846) started as a result of a dispute over an axe in a shop located in Fort Beaufort. (GPS coordinates: 32.7737 S, 26.6131 E).
