Clanwilliam was originally named Jan Disselsvlei, after the farm on which it was founded. It was later renamed Clanwilliam after the Earl of Clanwilliam, father-in-law to Sir John Cradock, Governor of the Cape from 1811 to 1814. (GPS coordinates: 32.1984 S, 18.9019 E).
