Botrivier takes its name from the river on which it is situated. The name of the river itself is derived from the Afrikaans botter ('butter') and rivier ('river'), a translation of the Khoikhoi Gouga. It is said to be so named because people from Cape Town went to that area to buy butter from the Khoikhoi. (GPS coordinates: 34.2284 S, 19.1982 E).
