Mookgopong was formally known as Naboomspruit, but was renamed Mookgopong in November 2006. The word mookgopong is of Pedi origin and refers to a type of tree (Euphorbia ingens) that grows there. The name Naboomspruit also refers to the same tree: the name is Afrikaans for 'euphorbia tree stream'.
On the 4 July 1901, during the Second Anglo-Boer War, Boer general CF Beyers (1869-1914) captured a troop train near Mookgopong, killing nine soldiers. (GPS coordinates: 24.4977 S, 28.7072 E).
