De Doorns is named after the farm De Doorns boven aan de Hex Rivier (Dutch), which translates to 'the thorns on the upper Hex River'. The name refers to the many thorn bushes that grow on the banks of the river. It was known as early as 1725, and the area is also known for its great scenic beauty.
