Namakgale is a Northern Sotho name which means 'meat of a long ago' or 'old meat' , in reference to a hill (located south of the Selati River) that contained a cave that was used to store meat as a precaution against attacks. (GPS coordinates: 23.9375 S, 31.0306 E).
