Piet Retief was established in 1884 by the Voortrekkers, on the farms Asloop and Geluk. It was named after the Voortrekker leader Piet Retief (1780-1838). The town's inhabitants, in 1886, declared the area to be their own republic, called the Klein Vrystaat (Little Free State). However, this republic only existed for five years: in 1891 it was absorbed into the South African Republic. In 2010 the government gave approval for the town's name to be changed to eMkhondo. (GPS coordinates: 27.0169 S, 30.8125 E).
