Cullinan was established in 1902 on the farm Elandsfontein. It was named after Sir Thomas Major Cullinan (1862-1936), who found a diamond along a farm fence in 1898. Later purchasing the land on which he found the stone, Cullinan founded the Premier Mine. Mining commenced in earnest in 1903, and in 1905 the world's largest diamond, the Cullinan Diamond, was discovered in the area. The town was also the site of a military training centre that was used during the Second World War. (GPS coordinates: 25.6764 S, 28.5316 E).
