Tembisa is a township that was established in 1957 by the apartheid government. Its name comes from the Zulu word thembisa which means 'to promise' or 'give hope'. It is said that when black residents were evicted from other areas in Johannesburg to live in what was to be called Tembisa, they saw the area as a place that would give hope, as they were no longer homeless. (GPS coordinates: 26.0106 S, 28.2219 E).
