Magaliesburg town is named after the Magaliesberg Mountain Range. The range was originally known as the Cashan Mountains, after a chief Khashane. Later, it was named after chief Mohale, whom the Voortrekkers encountered there. It was adapted to Magali(e): 'Magalie's mountain'. The town name can thus be directly translated as 'Magalie's town'.
