Dinokana takes its name from the Dinokana River. It is Tswana for 'place of little streams'. In 1957 the government ordered Chief Abram Ramotshere Pogiso Moiloa - a prominent figure who spoke out against the Bantu Authorities Act and the Bantu Education Act - to command the woman of his tribe to report to Dinokana to receive their pass books. Instead, he encouraged them to refuse. Only 76 woman turned up, causing a setback for the apartheid government's plans in the region. As a result, Chief Moiloa was banished from the area.
