Botha's Hill was said to have been named after Philip Rudolph Botha, grandfather of General Louis Botha (1862-1919), the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa. Another source states that it was named after the original owner of the land on which the town was established: Captain Cornelius Botha, former Harbour Master at Durban.
