Ixopo was originally named Stuartstown when it was originally established, after Marthinus Stuart, a district magistrate. However, the town later became known as Ixopo after the nearby Ixopo River. Ixopo is a Zulu word that is said to mean 'marsh', and refers to the squelchy sound that animal hooves make when they pass through the mud. Ixopo is also famously mentioned in the opening lines of Alan Paton's Cry, The Beloved Country: "There is a lovely road which runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it." (GPS coordinates: 30.1864 S, 30.0564 E).
